Reflection

A poem I wrote a couple years ago and completely forgot about until today, when I found it flipping through some old notebooks.

Look.
There, up ahead.
Who is that?

There, in the mirror.
Who is it?

What happened to her?

Where are they going?
What brought them here?

To this place?
This hell
I never though I'd be in.

Who is that?
In the mirror?

Is she me?
Is it?
I barely recognize her.

She's changed so much
From what she used to be

How did I end up here?
And if I could change it
. . . would I?

The Best Cookies Ever.

This isn't a cooking blog. But, seriously. Best cookies ever.

Gooey Butter Cookies

Ingredients:

1 (8 oz) package cream cheese
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 egg
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1 (18.25 oz) package yellow cake mix
1/4 cup powdered sugar

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a medium bowl, cream together the cream cheese and butter. Stir in the egg and vanilla. Add cake mix, stir until well blended. (Will be too thick to use an electric mixer) Roll into 1-inch balls and roll the balls in powdered sugar. Place 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

3. Bake for 10-13 minutes at 350 degrees.

4. Hide finished cookies before someone else eats them all.

Run, Forever - The Devil And Death And Me

The song of the day. Actually, the story of my life.

I just discovered this band a few weeks ago, and The Devil, and Death, and Me is quickly becoming one of my favorite albums. Brutal and honest, this album deals with the themes of death, youth, innocence, and having to rely on God even when you're not sure if you trust Him anymore.

"We used to dream, and now I don't even believe in you half the time. . . "

Truth.

I found this on a wall at a church my band played at, and I liked it.

Rawr.

Kind of an old picture, but I'm still in love with it.

I Hear You.

I hear you.
Sitting there in the corner, your sad thoughts leaking all over the place
Like you think no one notices.
Or maybe you want someone to notice. To care.

But you won't tell me what's wrong
And the silence between us is screaming
Go away! Leave me and let me be as alone and miserable as I always
Pretend that I am.
I don't know what to say. So I'll leave, in a minute.

But first, I just want to let you know
That when you're screaming at the world, thinking no one is listening
No one ever pays attention to you, no one ever knows what it's like to be you
I hear you.

A Happy Thought

Fireflies are beautiful.

I usually don't think about them much, but I have a friend from the West cost who says that they don't have fireflies out there. They're one of his favorite things about the Midwest.

Think about it.

They fly slow and close to the ground so little kids can catch them.

They're pretty, and virtually useless.

God made them just for us to enjoy.

Really says something about God, dosen't it?

He makes pretty, useless things for us everyday.

Fireflies, music, sunsets, mountains, stars.

He loves us with an immense, never tiring love, and he wants us to enjoy the life he's given us.

I have this image in my head of a little kid running up to its parent holding a drawing or something and saying, "Look what I made for you! Isn't it pretty?"

But instead it's the Father running to us, a smile on his face, saying, "Look what I made. It's just for you. Isn't it pretty?"

It is.

The Best of Plans. . .

Next month I'll be doing a fair amount of traveling with a band called Insomniac Folklore.
Maybe I'll blog about it.
